10 Lessons to Take From "It Ends With Us"

10 Lessons to Take From "It Ends With Us"

After reading the book two and a half years ago, I eagerly anticipated the movie adaptation. The film beautifully reinforced many of the lessons I remembered from the book.

Here are the top 10 takeaways from the movie version of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel.

  1. Healing takes time, but it is possible: Have patience with yourself as you heal from the traumas in your life. It won’t happen overnight, and some days may seem harder than others, but hold out faith that one day you will heal and find true love.

  2. Love isn’t always enough: Sometimes, love alone isn’t sufficient to sustain a healthy relationship. Respect, trust, and safety are equally important.

  3. Trust who people show you they are: No matter how much you want someone to change, you can't make them. Accept people for who they reveal themselves to be.

  4. Listen to your Intuition: Trust your instincts when something doesn’t feel right. Your inner voice often guides you toward the right decisions.

  5. You have the power of personal choice: You have the power to make choices that shape your future. Even in difficult situations, you can choose a path that leads to a better outcome for you.

  6. Standing up for yourself isn’t selfish: Manipulative people will make you feel like your actions are selfish when they go against what’s best for them, but standing up for yourself, and choosing to support yourself is not selfish. It’s healthy to have boundaries and step away when the boundaries are crossed.

  7. Abuse comes in many forms: People often confuse love with manipulation, control, and verbal abuse. Abuse isn’t just physical—it can also be mental, emotional, and psychological.

  8. Self-worth begins with self-love: Building self-worth starts with loving yourself. When you value yourself, you gain the strength to leave situations that don't serve or appreciate you.

  9. Having standards isn’t enough; you have to enforce them: Setting standards is important, but enforcing them is what sustains healthy relationships and filters out unhealthy ones. Don't let emotions cause you to compromise your standards.

  10. Promoting a distorted truth: Don’t twist the truth to justify staying or to avoid accepting someone’s help. If you can’t be honest with yourself or your friends, it's a sign that it's time to leave. Be truthful with those who are offering help.

Reflecting on these takeaways from the movie adaptation has deepened my appreciation for Colleen Hoover's novel. The film not only captured the essence of the story but also brought its important lessons to life in a powerful way. It’s a reminder that while life’s challenges can be overwhelming, we have the strength within us to overcome them. Whether it’s through healing, making tough choices, or standing firm in our beliefs, the journey to self-love and empowerment is one worth taking. The movie beautifully emphasizes that even in the face of adversity, hope and resilience can lead to a brighter, more fulfilling future.
