Why Reading is Self-Care: Simple Ways to Reconnect Through Books

Self-care can oftentimes be seen solely as spa days, therapy sessions, or workouts. But a lot of times it’s simple things like lighting a candle, journaling, or reading. Self-care really can be anything you want it to be - anything that makes you feel relaxed, calm, and grounded. Some people might find the act of walking around a shopping mall as self-care…..or maybe that’s just me. The reality is, self-care is anything that improves your mental, emotional, and physical health.

While reading has grown in popularity over the last few years thanks to TikTok and other social media platforms, it’s still one of the most underrated self-care practices. I love to read, so sometimes reading for me is like entertainment, but on other days, it comes in the form of self-care. When my mind is racing, my to-do list is overwhelming, or I’m just not having a great day, turning to a book changes everything. It calms me down, brings me back into reality (while also enabling me to escape reality for a moment), and reminds me to breathe.

The Benefits of Reading for Your Mind and Mood

Reading is one of the few activities that fully quiets your mind while still keeping it engaged. It slows your breathing, lowers stress, and helps you focus on one thing at a time - something that’s rare in a world constantly fighting for your attention. Whether it’s a novel that makes you feel deeply or a personal growth book that helps you understand yourself better, reading creates space for reflection and peace.

How Reading Connects to Mindfulness and Journaling

Reading and journaling go hand in hand. Both ask you to slow down, be present, and process what you’re feeling. Sometimes, I’ll jot down a sentence or quote from a book that really stands out to me and use it as a journaling prompt. It’s a simple way to turn inspiration into reflection - and it helps you notice what resonates with you most in this season of life.

Ways to Make Reading Part of Your Self-Care Routine

If you want to incorporate reading into your wellness routine, start small.

  • Read for 10 minutes before bed instead of scrolling on your phone.

  • Keep a book in your bag for quiet moments during the day.

  • Pair your reading time with something relaxing, like tea, your favorite candle, or soft music.

  • Try journaling a few thoughts after reading - what stood out, what you related to, or what inspired you.

The goal isn’t to read more; it’s to read intentionally. Let it be your quiet time - your reset - even if it’s just a few pages a day.

My Book Recommendations

If you’re looking for a place to start, here are two of my current favorites:

Fiction: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah - a beautifully written story about love, courage, and resilience that completely pulls you in.

Non-Fiction: The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest - a powerful guide to self-sabotage, growth, and becoming your best self.

Both books, in their own way, remind you how healing it can be to slow down and reflect - whether through someone else’s story or your own.

Journal Prompt:

What does self-care look like to me right now, and how can I create more moments that truly recharge me?
